Success Secrets 11 – 20
11. Joseph went through challenges
A path without obstacles leads nowhere. Greatness is a journey through a jungle where we have to conquer wild beasts, kill the dragon and deal with the many challenges we face. These are experiences which would strengthen us to accommodate the greatness ahead. We must not neglect this factor because the way to success is uphill. Challenges are inevitable. Joseph faced challenges. It is clear that the bitter experiences Joseph experienced, prepared him for the top.
SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” –2 Cor. 4:17.
12. Joseph had a positive mental attitude
Those who can see God’s hand in everything can leave everything in God’s hand. Joseph had a positive mental attitude. He laughed to forget. Considering the heavy weight of his challenges, I saw a side of Joseph that is worth emulating. He viewed the half-filled cup of water as “half full”. The pessimist says, it is half empty, but from Joseph’s point of view, with a little more volume, the cup will soon be full. We must view life this way to be a success.
SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: “For to him that is joined to all living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion” –Ecclesiastes 9:4.
13. Joseph was a skilful worker
Solomon declared, “Seest thou a man diligent and skilful in his business, he shall stand before kings and not mean men”. Skill is required for greatness, and wisdom is the mother of skill. Joseph possessed unusual wit. Pharaoh said, “There is no man as wise and discreet as thou art…” the rest is history. One major secret of success is the ability to put knowledge to work accurately. This is simply a definition of wisdom. The works of your hand
SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: “And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening; and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, camels were coming ….” Gen 24:63.
14. Joseph utilized his talents
Joseph knew he was a creature of value and he did what he could with what he had, where he found himself. He exercised his talents and when in prison, he was a master administrator. He did all things well and his masters left all in his hands.
SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: “And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth”- Matthew 25:30
15. Joseph possessed unusual favour
Favour kept Joseph from the hands of satan. Favour is a shield against death, shame and total breakdown. From the beginning of his life, I noticed the favour factor working for Joseph. Amongst the twelve, he was favoured in his father’s sight. Favour separates, it commands an ‘unfair’ treatment and gives undue or unmerited promotion. I see favour as a supernatural liking by men, which causes them to do you unusual good. Joseph’s father gave him a coat of many colours. This factor kept coming up throughout Joseph’s life.
SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: “Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a coat of many colours”. Genesis 37:3.
16. Joseph was a responsible man
There is a need for us to stop making excuses for not succeeding. I reverence the ‘response-ability’ of Joseph. Yes, he was sold into slavery but he never allowed it to dissipate his sense of responsibility. It could have been worse; he could have been killed. In the house of Potiphar, he was responsible and went after his duties with diligence.
SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, ruler provideth her meat in summer and gathereth her food in the harvest” Proverb 6:6-8.
17. Joseph asked for a favour
In Genesis 40, we see where Joseph solved the problem of Pharaoh’s chief butler in prison. With all humility, he said to the butler, “but think on me when it shall be well with thee, and show kindness, I pray thee, unto me and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house” (verse 14). Joseph knew that one ingredient of favour was to ask for it. Two years later (Gen 41:9), the butler remembered Joseph’s request and the rest is history. Learn to ask. While trusting in God, ask for a favour. The butler remembered Joseph’s request and mentioned Joseph to Pharaoh.
SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: “…. yet ye have not because ye ask not” – James 4:2.
18. Joseph was accountable
I was amazed at Joseph’s attitude towards the coming of his great family to Egypt. Genesis 46:31 is an example of accountability. He asked Pharaoh before taking a step. He never took his privileged position for granted. I wish Christians would understand this. Do you know accountability in your relationship with your spouse and pastor could keep a man or woman from adultery and sexual immorality? Undue independence is not freedom; it is a weakness in disguise.
SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: “Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit of it; so he who patiently and faithfully guards and heeds his master, shall be honoured” – Proverbs 27:18 AMP.
19. Joseph walked in love
Joseph actually walked in love. He had ample reasons to retaliate or seek vengeance, but love will always find a way. Joseph found a way-the way forward. He said, “You meant it for evil but God meant it for good Love is practical.’’ It goes beyond words. We should love indeed.
SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: “He who covers and forgives an offence, seeks love, but he who repeats or harps on a matter separates even close friends” – Proverbs 17:9 AMP.
20. Joseph forgave again and again
Many harrowing experiences of so many Christians today can be traced to unforgiveness. Many a time, folks have been totally healed of a disease when they chose to forgive their friends or family member. Let go today and you will enjoy unquestionable peace. It’s your turn to keep off the tormentors of hell from your life.
SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: “Shouldest, not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow servant, even as I had pity on thee?” – Matthew 18:33.
